Pastor Greg Varney graduated from RHEMA Bible Training Center
in 1980. He and Pastor Debbie Varney then spent a season volunteering
in several areas of the helps ministry in their local church in Tulsa.
In April of 1982, they accepted a full-time ministry position at a small
church in southern Louisiana, where they soon became Pastors.
After three years, the Lord spoke clearly to Pastor Greg and Debbie to move back to their hometown of Topeka to start a church for His glory, and to name the church "Light of the World." So on March 17, 1985, Light of the World Christian Center was begun in the Ramada Inn South.
Besides the Varney family, there were four people in attendance that first service, and Pastor and Mrs. Debbie didn't know any of them. "There are certain challenges to going back to your hometown and starting a church," says Pastor. "Sometimes you think it would just be easier to go someplace where nobody knows you and start fresh. I really thought when we moved from Topeka that we would never be back to live here again. But now there's nowhere else in the world we'd rather be, because we know we're right in the middle of God's will."
In March of 2004, the congregation moved into the beautiful new 1600-seat facility, with nurseries, classrooms, and office space.
The Varney's have six children and eight grandchildren.
